During the 2015 federal election, Justin Trudeau insisted, “It’s time for us to reclaim our place.” His implication was clear. Under Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Canada’s refusal to support international organizations and pacts had cost our country prestige and influence.
Immediately after being elected, Trudeau famously declared that Canada was “back” on the world stage. His government would “restore Canadian leadership in the world” and “make a real and valuable contribution to a more peaceful and prosperous world.”
His victory, Trudeau insisted, had ushered in a “new era of Canadian international engagement.”
Ever since, of course, the Trudeau government has lurked from one foreign policy embarrassment or failure to the next.
