As he stood holding his four-year-old daughter in his arms, the emotional 29-year-old was cheered for his bravery at a vigil for those gunned down according to The Tennessean.
Many more likely would have died if Mr Shaw hadn’t rushed gunman Travis Reinking as he reloaded his AR-15 rifle after shooting dead four people in the Nashville eatery.
<>’I’m just a regular guy, I never thought I’d be up here at the pulpit looking all of you in the eyes,’ he said before he needed to pause.
After the crowd lifted his spirits and a man placed a hand on his shoulder, he continued: ‘I’m just in a weird spot right now because I got a lot of sadness.
‘This is the first time I’ve seen her since the incident,’ he said of his daughter Brooklyn.
‘I actually tied to count the hairs on her eyelashes just because I was like, I almost didn’t see you anymore.’
Mr Shaw joined more than a hundred mourners in four minutes silences, one for every victim, just a few days after the shooting.
